Warrnambol Pest Management Plan
EcoFutures worked with Warrnambool City Council to develop a practical, risk-based Pest Plant and Animal Management Framework that aligns with regional strategies and protects biodiversity through prevention, eradication, containment, and targeted asset protection.

Warrnambool is a unique regional city in southwest Victoria, encompassing urban, rural, and coastal environments with significant natural and cultural values. However, the introduction of pest plants and animals has altered these ecosystems, threatening biodiversity, waterways, and native species. To ensure long-term biosecurity, Warrnambool City Council sought to develop a Pest Plant and Animal Management Framework that aligns with Green Warrnambool, Warrnambool 2040, and state and national biosecurity strategies.
The Alluvium Group, leveraging our expertise in environmental program evaluation, stakeholder engagement, and risk assessment, has delivered a strategic framework built on four key actions:
- Prevention & Preparedness – Stopping new pest species from establishing.
- Eradication – Removing small populations before they spread.
- Containment – Preventing further spread of established species.
- Asset-Based Protection – Managing pests in high-value ecological areas.
This collaborative, risk-based approach has integrated scientific knowledge, Traditional Owner insights, and community engagement to develop a practical, cost-effective framework for Council and private landholders—securing Warrnambool’s environmental future.
