Rejuvenation, Bioremediation, and Sustainable Conservation of Silsako Beel, Guwahati

Silsako Beel, Guwahati

Silsako Beel, a shallow wetland, is a significant urban water body that serves as a reservoir basin for storm water runoff from the nearby hills and Meghalaya. The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is undertaking the conservation and restoration of the beel to bring people closer to nature, raise awareness about its importance, and motivate its preservation along with the diverse aquatic habitat. Ecologically, the beel is crucial as it supports various food chains and food webs, recharges groundwater, traps solar energy, and provides shelter to numerous flora and fauna with ecological and economic value.

Alluvium was engaged to develop a Detailed Project Report for the rejuvenation and conservation of Silsako Beel. Our work included conducting surveys for wastewater and sediment quality assessment, developing wetland area water and nutrient budgeting for better recharging and nutrient abatement, and performing requisite site studies. These studies examined existing facilities such as access, utilities, services, water quality, existing plantation, and aquatic life. Additionally, we studied the ecosystem of the beel, conducted a geo-hydrological study of the catchment area.
