Climate Risk and Adaptation Assessment

JSW Energy Limited (JSW) has engaged Alluvium to conduct a Climate Risk and Adaptation Assessment (CRA) for three hydropower assets in Himachal Pradesh. These include the Karcham Wangtoo plant with a 1,091 MW capacity, commissioned in 2011; the Baspa plant, a 300 MW facility commissioned in 2013; and the Kuther plant, which is currently under construction with a planned capacity of 240 MW. Recognising the growing risks posed by climate change, JSW aims to evaluate the vulnerability of these assets to changing climate conditions and ensure their long-term sustainability and resilience.
Alluvium is conducting a Type 1 light-touch CRA as per the ‘Principles of Climate Risk Management for Climate Proofing Projects’ framework (July 2020). This involves analyzing historic climate trends and future climate projections for the sub-basins where these hydropower plants operate. The assessment identifies key climate risks and vulnerabilities impacting the plants and provides strategic recommendations for climate adaptation measures. By integrating climate projections with operational risk assessments, the CRA will offer data-driven insights to enhance the climate resilience of JSW's hydropower assets.
